As believers, we are called to live in unity and harmony with others. This is not always easy, but the Bible gives us guidelines on how to do so. In Philippians 2:1-7, Paul encourages us to have the same mindset as Jesus, and to be humble, gentle, and patient when dealing with others.
- Be like-minded. Philippians 2:2 tells us to “make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” We should strive to be unified in our beliefs and actions, so that we can all work together for the same purpose.
- Have the same attitude as Christ. In Philippians 2:5-6, Paul instructs us to “have in you the same attitude that Christ Jesus had, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped.” We should follow Jesus’ example of humility and servanthood, and remember that all people are of equal value, regardless of our differences.
- Be humble. In Philippians 2:3, Paul says to “do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit”. Rather than striving for our own glory and recognition, we should seek to serve others and put their needs above our own.
- Be gentle. Paul also tells us in Philippians 2:4 to “not merely look out for our own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” We should be gentle and kind to others, even when we disagree with them.
- Be patient. In Philippians 2:7, Paul encourages us to “have the same attitude of mind toward one another that Christ Jesus had.” We should be patient with others, and not expect them to be perfect.
- Speak the truth in love. In Ephesians 4:15, Paul tells us to “speak the truth in love.” We should always speak the truth, but we should do so in a loving way, so that our words do not hurt or offend.
- Pray for others. Finally, we should always be praying for others. James 5:16 NASB says Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. Praying for others is an important part of our faith journey. It is a way of lifting each other up, supporting each other, and showing love. When we pray for others, we can be assured that God will hear and answer our prayers in His perfect timing.
As we strive to live a transformed life with others, let us remember the words of Philippians 2:1-7: be like-minded, have the same attitude as Christ, be humble, gentle, patient, speak the truth in love, and pray for others. May we use these words as a guide to our actions and interactions with others, always seeking to show respect, kindness, understanding, and compassion. Let us be inspired to be a light in the darkness and show the world what it means to live transformed lives with others.
