Leaving the Old Behind

Today’s sermon is based on Ephesians 4:22-24, which says, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Let’s explore how this passage calls us to leave the old behind and embrace the new.

Put off the old self.
The passage urges us to put off our old self, which is being corrupted by deceitful desires. By this, it is telling us to recognize the temptations and desires that are not of God, and to put them away by the power of the Holy Spirit. We must strive to rid ourselves of our old ways and turn away from sin, in order to live in the ways of God.

Be made new in the attitude of your minds.
The passage also tells us to be made new in the attitude of our minds. We must strive to renew our minds daily, so that our thoughts and actions are in line with the will of God. This requires us to be intentional in our spiritual growth and to be diligent in our pursuit of a new and transformed life.

Put on the new self.
Finally, the passage calls us to put on the new self, which is created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. This means that we must strive to imitate the character of God in our words and actions. As we accept the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to live a life that reflects the righteousness and holiness of God.

In conclusion, Ephesians 4:22-24 calls us to leave the old behind and embrace the new. We must put off our old self by recognizing our deceitful desires and putting them away. We must be made new in the attitude of our minds by seeking to renew our minds on a daily basis. And we must put on the new self by imitating the character of God in our words and actions. May we all strive to live a life that is pleasing to God and that reflects his righteousness and holiness.
